Somewhat Analog Things About Photography

5 Photos That Didn't Make It Into My Photo Book / Zine

I am currently in the middle of creating my first photo book. Or as more hip people like to say - zine. I have always liked printing my photos. But not everything that I like in my brain, I do in real life. I don't have many of my photos printed in any form. And I want to change that FAST!

There are many challenges in creating a photo book. Thinking of a theme. Finding, filtering and sequencing photos. And many, many other things. I will get into all this at some point, but first I want to finish the first photo book to have as much understanding as I can. At least as much understanding as one can have after printing one book.

Creating a photo book takes time and I don't have binders full of time being thrown at me. The time must come from somewhere else and this week the time comes from this website. Instead of a deeper writing about some ancient camera or abstract learnings one can take from developing film in beer, I will create a top 5 list. Except that it's not a real "top" list. It's just 5 photos that were considered for my photo book but didn't stick the landing for various reasons and so must live in the purgatory that is my digital photo library. Why a top 5 list? Because I like to go one step beyo...I like to stick to a round-ish number that everyone else is using.

I could skip writing on this website this week but I feel like I'm on a roll that I don't want to ruin. My current goal is to write one piece of content every week. I would like to reach my goal even if I only have myself to report to.

I will keep my photo book theme a mystery for now. You might be able to conjure some inklings of a theme based on the photos I will show. Keep in mind that these are the photos that were rejected.

Photo of an old mansion.

Film
Lomography Color Negative 800 EI800

Sunny Brown

First picture is a sunny photo of an old mansion. I like the photo although the top is a bit busy.

Black and white photo of a house.
Camera
Leica M3
Lens
Leitz Summitar 50mm f2
Film
Kodak T-MAX 400 EI200
Development
Compard R09 / Rodinal; Dilution 1:100; 1hr semi-stand
Scanner
Reflecta ProScan 10T
Two Windows

I still need to do a review of the Summitar lens. It gives this photo a "kind of" medium format like rendering. Sadly it needs some servicing as aperture ring is very hard to turn.

The photo itself is OK but doesn't really fit the theme. It might find its place in some other book.

Photo of a bird house mounted on a regular house.
Camera
Leica M9
Lens
Canon LTM 50mm f1.8
Small House On Big House

I like the light brown tones across this photo. There will be a spiritually similar photo included in the final photo book!

Photo of some logs.
Camera
Sigma DP2 Merrill
Lens
Sigma Lens 30mm f2.8
Logs

Nice and calm photo of some logs.

Photo of a back yard.
Camera

Sigma Lens 30mm f2.8
Structure

Photos taken on the Sigma with Foveon sensor are often very nice. This and the previous photo have some similarities so could pair well together on a spread. They won't appear on my first zine but they could appear somewhere in the future.

So those were the photos that didn't have what it takes to be in a top class photo book. Maybe they will find themselves in another zine. Otherwise they will accumulate digital rot so large that it will pose a risk to the survival of the internet.

Keep an eye on future writings relating to photo books. I have several writings and other things planned around this subject.
